Chapter Ten

Marietta

My head was spinning with the information overload I’d experienced over the past couple of hours and questions ping-ponged around my mind but I needed to absorb the answers to those I had already asked before quizzing the men further.

When Gray had taken my hand into his, my body had gone haywire. I was experiencing the strangest feelings. Maybe it was the effect of the morphine?

“What’s going on in your pretty little mind?” Gray asked.

His question had my eyes locking on his and I saw the compassion and understanding deep within.

“Honestly?”

“It’s what I’d prefer.”

“I’m very confused but after what you’ve told me, so many things are starting to make sense. I’m beginning to understand why my sense of smell, hearing, and sight are more acute than others I know, and why I have strong gut feelings about situations. I was closer to Dad than Mum even though I loved…love her very much. Maybe it’s the effect of my father’s blood in my veins.”

“They would be very proud of you for understanding and for what it’s worth, I think they made a mistake not telling you while they were alive.”

“It scared the shit out of me when I saw you change and I have to admit, were we not trapped by fire, I probably would have run off screaming when I remembered before questioning my sanity. Being forced to remain here has allowed me the time to calm down and be more objective. I have questions that can’t be answered now Mum and Dad are gone but you have helped put some of the past into perspective and things I didn’t understand at the time now make sense.”

“Breakfast is up,” Parker advised.

Gray helped me to my feet and walked me to the table where he pulled out a chair and waited for me to sit.

The food…bacon, eggs, hash browns, and baked beans looked delicious and I realised I was starving, having not eaten since lunch the previous day. The cast was restrictive and it didn’t take Gray long to notice my dilemma.

“Would you like me to cut up your food?”

“Please. I don’t particularly want to pick it up in my fingers and make a pig of myself but I’m hungry enough to do so,” I laughed.

Parker set mugs of coffee on the table, but instead of joining Gray and I, he returned to the kitchen and rummaged in a drawer for something before coming to my side.

“I’m going to take the IV down, I don’t think you need it any longer.” Parker spoke while pulling on a pair of surgical gloves.

I watched him turn off the flow, withdraw the needle without me feeling a thing, and put a Band-Aid over the tiny puncture hole.

Gray pushed my plate back in front of me and I ate hungrily. I felt better with my mind calmed. It took me no time at all to polish off the delicious food.

“When did you last eat?” Gray asked.

“I had a sandwich at lunchtime yesterday after a swim at Bridal Veil Falls.
